A lot of people get confused when they hear the phrases “Motorhomes”, “Campervans”, “RVs” and “Caravans”. It can be very confusing to a prospective Motorhome/Campervan/RV/caravan owner or someone looking to rent one. So really what are they talking about?

Motorhome: A large motor vehicle that is designed to be lived in while travelling, like a mobile home. It contains cooking equipments, one or more beds, and sometimes a toilet. Some examples of Motorhome manufacturers include: Kea Motorhomes, Pacific Horizon Motorhomes, Excel Motorhomes and Maui Motorhomes.

Camper van or Camper: Similar to the above definition of a Motorhome but sometimes smaller. Most times, Campervans and Motorhomes are used interchangeably. Examples of Camper van manufacturers include Kiwi Camper, Happy Campers, Britz Camper vans and Tui Campers.

Caravan: A wheeled vehicle for living or travelling in which contains beds and cooking equipments. It is usually attached and pulled by a car. In the olden days, they were pulled by horse and popularly known with Gypsies and called Gypsy Caravans, used to travel across countries. They were sometimes also used by Circuses because of it flexibility and mobility.

RV: Acronym for Recreational Vehicle. As the name implies, this means a vehicle capable of being used as a temporary home. RV is a term which can be fairly used to mean a motorhome, campervan or caravan especially in the United States.

Depending on where you’re looking to rent or buy a Motorhome, it could be called something else. For instance, in the United States and Canada, Motorhomes are usually called RVs, where as in Europe, they are referred to as Motorhomes or Campervans interchangeably.
